These glass rhinestone sculptures transform familiar forms into objects of seduction, humour and contradiction. Their kitsch surfaces and unapologetic glamour draw on the visual language of camp—where the excessive, the artificial and the seemingly vulgar become a means of expression.

The rhinestone becomes both material and metaphor: decorative, fragile, obsessive and deliberately conspicuous. Each surface demands attention, turning the object into something to be looked at, desired and questioned.

Rooted in queer visual culture, the works embrace the tension between masculinity and decoration, intimacy and spectacle, sincerity and irony. What might appear playful or absurd becomes a vehicle for examining how queer bodies, desires and identities are made visible.

MaxHammondStudio presents a contemporary crystal-encrusted sculpture – an original handcrafted work.

Created between 2024–2025, this piece was exhibited as part of “13 Beautiful Horses” in Leicester and reviewed in Corridor8 Magazine (September/October 2025 issue). This sculpture can be standing or wall mounted as seen in the photos.

This sculpture comes from a deeply personal place, intertwined with the artist’s lived experience and ongoing exploration of masculinity, intimacy, and perception.

Hand-formed in clay through an intuitive and instinctive process, the form reflects an “average” scale—referencing the often unspoken realities of the body, rather than idealised or exaggerated representations. In doing so, the work quietly challenges expectations around normality, value, and comparison.

The surface moves through a deliberate gradient of colour—transitioning from warm amber and burnt orange into deeper brown tones, before culminating in a concentrated red at the tip. This progression is intentional. The softer oranges suggest warmth, familiarity, and the everyday, while the darker browns introduce weight, grounding, and a sense of realism.

At the tip, the red intensifies the reading of the piece. It signals danger, sensitivity, and vulnerability—yet at the same time remains visually seductive. This duality is key: the eye is drawn to it instinctively, despite its suggestion of risk. The colour becomes both a warning and an attraction, reflecting the complex relationship between desire, consequence, and perception.

At its core, the work reflects on contradiction. Something often framed as crude, excessive, or even detrimental is re-presented here with care, time, and attention—transformed into something intricate and visually compelling. It holds a duality: a source of insecurity or judgement, yet also something fundamentally tied to connection, intimacy, and the origins of life.

As with all works from MaxHammondStudio, rhinestones are used deliberately. Materials commonly dismissed as decorative or superficial are elevated, challenging ideas of worth, taste, and artistic value.

Each sculpture takes approximately 25–50 hours to complete. Every crystal is individually selected and applied by hand, creating a tactile, light-reactive surface that enhances the depth and movement of the form.

These works are not mass-produced objects—they are physical extensions of personal narrative.

The artist has been working within fine art for over eight years, holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art. Influences include Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, John Giorno, and Andy Warhol.
