These glass rhinestone sculptures transform familiar forms into objects of seduction, humour and contradiction. Their kitsch surfaces and unapologetic glamour draw on the visual language of camp—where the excessive, the artificial and the seemingly vulgar become a means of expression.

The rhinestone becomes both material and metaphor: decorative, fragile, obsessive and deliberately conspicuous. Each surface demands attention, turning the object into something to be looked at, desired and questioned.

Rooted in queer visual culture, the works embrace the tension between masculinity and decoration, intimacy and spectacle, sincerity and irony. What might appear playful or absurd becomes a vehicle for examining how queer bodies, desires and identities are made visible.

MaxHammondStudio presents a contemporary crystal-encrusted sculpture – an original handcrafted work.

Created between 2024–2025, this piece was exhibited as part of “13 Beautiful Horses” in Leicester and reviewed in Corridor8 Magazine (September/October 2025 issue).

This sculpture comes from a deeply personal place, intertwined with the artist’s lived experience and ongoing exploration of intimacy, masculinity, and emotional vulnerability.

Hand-formed in clay through an intuitive and instinctive process, the form is deliberately minimal and bodily—subtly referencing the human figure while remaining abstracted. It exists in a space between exposure and softness, where the physical and emotional intersect.

The surface is defined by a gentle transition of colour. Soft blush pink tones move gradually into clear and reflective crystals, creating a delicate gradient that feels both tender and exposed. The pink suggests warmth, sensitivity, and flesh-like familiarity, while the clear stones begin to strip that back—introducing a sense of transparency, fragility, and emotional openness.

This shift in tone reflects a movement from comfort into vulnerability. What begins as something warm and recognisable becomes something more exposed and unresolved—mirroring the complexities of intimacy and personal experience.

As with all works from MaxHammondStudio, rhinestones are used deliberately. Materials often associated with decoration or superficiality are recontextualised, challenging traditional ideas of value, taste, and seriousness within contemporary art.

Each sculpture takes approximately 25–50 hours to complete. Every crystal is individually selected and applied by hand, creating a tactile, light-reactive surface that transforms depending on its environment.

Light plays a key role in the work—moving across the surface, shifting between softness and intensity, and drawing attention to both the material and the form beneath.

What may initially appear delicate or decorative reveals a deeper narrative—one rooted in personal experience, emotional exposure, and the tension between what is shown and what is concealed.

These works are not mass-produced objects—they are physical extensions of personal narrative.

The artist has been working within fine art for over eight years, holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art. Influences include Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, John Giorno, and Andy Warhol.
