These glass rhinestone sculptures transform familiar forms into objects of seduction, humour and contradiction. Their kitsch surfaces and unapologetic glamour draw on the visual language of camp—where the excessive, the artificial and the seemingly vulgar become a means of expression.

The rhinestone becomes both material and metaphor: decorative, fragile, obsessive and deliberately conspicuous. Each surface demands attention, turning the object into something to be looked at, desired and questioned.

Rooted in queer visual culture, the works embrace the tension between masculinity and decoration, intimacy and spectacle, sincerity and irony. What might appear playful or absurd becomes a vehicle for examining how queer bodies, desires and identities are made visible.

MaxHammondStudio presents a contemporary crystal-encrusted sculpture – an original handcrafted work.

Created between 2024–2025, this piece was exhibited as part of “13 Beautiful Horses” in Leicester and reviewed in Corridor8 Magazine (September/October 2025 issue).

This sculpture comes from a deeply personal place, intertwined with the artist’s lived experience and ongoing exploration of masculinity, intimacy, and perception.

Hand-formed in clay through an intuitive and instinctive process, the form is deliberately minimal and intimate in scale, subtly referencing the body while challenging expectations around proportion and value. Echoing ideas of the “micropenis,” the work confronts the cultural narrative that equates size with worth, influence, and masculinity—questioning how these measurements are constructed and internalised.

Extending from the tip is a fine metal wire, delicately holding glass stones and beading. This gesture introduces movement and fluidity, emulating a moment of release while disrupting the solidity of the form. The suspended elements catch light differently from the body, creating a contrast between stillness and motion.

The use of glass stones and beading produces a liquid-like effect—suggestive of bodily fluids—yet transformed into something ornamental and visually compelling. This is where the work becomes most charged: materials and references often considered private, uncomfortable, or even “disgusting” are re-presented as intricate, jewel-like details. The piece invites a shift in perception—asking what defines beauty, and why certain realities are rejected while others are aestheticised.

At its core, the sculpture operates within contradiction. It is both intimate and exposed, humorous and sincere, delicate and confrontational. It reflects on the pressures placed on the male body, where scale is often linked to identity, confidence, and perceived value.

As with all works from MaxHammondStudio, rhinestones and decorative materials are used deliberately. Elements typically associated with excess or superficiality are elevated, challenging traditional hierarchies of taste and artistic worth.

Each sculpture takes approximately 25–50 hours to complete. Every crystal and bead is individually selected and applied by hand, resulting in a highly tactile, light-reactive surface.

These works are not mass-produced objects—they are physical extensions of personal narrative.

The artist has been working within fine art for over eight years, holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art. Influences include Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, John Giorno, and Andy Warhol.

Light continuously transforms the work—moving across both the solid form and the suspended elements, shifting between subtlety and intensity.
