Neon Canvas Works

“IT’S NOT A FUCKING TRACEY EMIN X” 2022
Original neon wire on canvas. one of a kind 1/1.

MHStudio’s neon work brings text, poetry and queer imagery into the darkness, drawing on the visual language of neon as a form of public declaration—seductive, immediacy that provokes the viewer. Created in response to the neon works of Tracey Emin, the pieces extend MHStudio’s ongoing use of language as a visceral material within his practice.

The work reads like a diary entry made public - an emotional utterance based on personal experience. Enabling Hammond to transform the pain of these memories into light.

Light becomes both image and material. The works are deliberately dependent on darkness. In daylight, the works are more subtle, and less prominent. The act of viewing therefore becomes part of the work—the viewer must enter the darkness and the unknown to fully understand the context of the neon.

Colour becomes emotional as much as visual. Saturated pinks, blues and greens glow against the blackness, transforming words and bodies into illuminated fragments of memory, desire and experience. The neon is simultaneously intimate and confrontational: a private thought made spectacular, a confession made luminous. A poetic dialogue emerges from viewer to artwork as the work is d

The darkness is not the absence of the image. It is what allows the image to exist and be seen. Exploring a raw feeling that remains open and reliable to viewers. Physically following the marks on the canvas with neon wire retains an intimate and human feel. Across the work, text is not simply something to be read. It is a material—something to illuminate, obscure, expose and inhabit.

This specific piece has different functions. The led lights are battery operated and can change modes to pulse light and then to flash light.
