MaxHammondStudio presents a contemporary crystal-encrusted sculpture – an original handcrafted work.

Created between 2024–2025, this piece was exhibited as part of “13 Beautiful Horses” in Leicester and featured in a review by Corridor8 Magazine (September/October 2025 issue).

This sculpture introduces a more playful and exploratory tone within the artist’s ongoing investigation of form, masculinity, and perception. There is a distinct sense of curiosity embedded in the work—an almost childlike enthusiasm that approaches the subject not with rigidity, but with openness and experimentation. It feels less resolved, more inquisitive, as though actively questioning what defines the form itself.

Hand-formed in clay through an intuitive and instinctive process, the piece leans into analysis through construction. The use of larger rhinestones becomes intentional and structural, highlighting key components and breaking the form down into its essential parts. Rather than presenting a seamless surface, the sculpture exposes its own logic—examining what makes a penis recognisable, and how those elements can be abstracted, exaggerated, or reassembled.

The surface is defined by a dynamic tonal shift. A saturated pink at the base gradually transitions into deeper purples, before softening into a lighter, almost delicate pink at the tip. This gradient introduces both visual movement and emotional range—moving from boldness and intensity into softness and sensitivity. Running through the centre, a line of clear glass rhinestones suggests veins and internal structure, adding a sense of anatomy while also reinforcing the sculptural quality of the piece.

This interplay between colour, material, and placement creates a heightened sense of texture and depth. The variation in crystal size and tone disrupts uniformity, introducing rhythm and complexity. It is through this layering that the work expands—both visually and conceptually—pushing beyond surface decoration into something more constructed and considered.

The sculpture exists in a space between play and critique. Its bright, tactile surface invites engagement, yet beneath this is a focused examination of form, identity, and expectation. By dissecting and re-presenting the body in this way, the work challenges fixed definitions and opens up a broader conversation about how we recognise, value, and interpret the physical self.

As with all works from MaxHammondStudio, rhinestones are used deliberately. Materials often associated with decoration are recontextualised, challenging traditional hierarchies of taste while reinforcing the relationship between surface and meaning.

Each sculpture takes approximately 25–50 hours to complete. Every crystal is individually selected and applied by hand, creating a tactile, light-reactive surface that shifts depending on its environment.

These works are not mass-produced—they are physical extensions of personal narrative and lived experience.

The artist has been working within fine art for over eight years, holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art. Influences include Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, John Giorno, and Andy Warhol.
