These glass rhinestone sculptures transform familiar forms into objects of seduction, humour and contradiction. Their kitsch surfaces and unapologetic glamour draw on the visual language of camp—where the excessive, the artificial and the seemingly vulgar become a means of expression.

The rhinestone becomes both material and metaphor: decorative, fragile, obsessive and deliberately conspicuous. Each surface demands attention, turning the object into something to be looked at, desired and questioned.

Rooted in queer visual culture, the works embrace the tension between masculinity and decoration, intimacy and spectacle, sincerity and irony. What might appear playful or absurd becomes a vehicle for examining how queer bodies, desires and identities are made visible.

MaxHammondStudio presents a contemporary crystal-encrusted sculpture – an original handcrafted work. This sculpture can be mounted onto the wall with a screw.

Created between 2024–2025, this piece was exhibited as part of “13 Beautiful Horses” in Leicester and reviewed in Corridor8 Magazine (September/October 2025 issue).

This sculpture comes from a deeply personal place, rooted in lived experience and an ongoing exploration of sexuality, intimacy, and consequence.

Hand-formed in clay through an intuitive and instinctive process, the form is deliberately erratic and subtly phallic—engaging with themes of masculinity, sexual expression, and vulnerability. This particular work leans further into that dialogue, confronting not just desire, but the aftermath of sexual exploration.

The soft pink body—tender, almost flesh-like—is interrupted by a dense, jewel-like cluster at the tip. Here, warmer tones of gold, red, and saturated pinks emerge, shifting the reading of the piece. What initially appears seductive and ornamental begins to suggest something more complex: attraction, risk, stigma, and the uneasy boundary between beauty and harm.

The use of rhinestones—materials often associated with decoration or excess—becomes deliberate. Referencing ideas of “kitsch,” the work challenges assumptions around value, taste, and worth, elevating the overlooked while questioning what we choose to aestheticise or ignore.

Each sculpture takes approximately 25–50 hours to complete. Every crystal is individually selected and placed by hand, building a surface that is both seductive and confrontational. The piece glitters under light—drawing viewers in—while holding a deeper, more uneasy narrative beneath.

This is not simply a sculpture, but a reflection on experience—on desire, denial, and the realities that often follow.

The artist has been working within fine art for over eight years, holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art. Influences include Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, John Giorno, and Andy Warhol.

Light continuously transforms the work—moving across iridescent stones, shifting between softness and intensity, drawing attention to both surface and form. It is designed to be lived with, questioned, and interpreted.
