These glass rhinestone sculptures transform familiar forms into objects of seduction, humour and contradiction. Their kitsch surfaces and unapologetic glamour draw on the visual language of camp—where the excessive, the artificial and the seemingly vulgar become a means of expression.

The rhinestone becomes both material and metaphor: decorative, fragile, obsessive and deliberately conspicuous. Each surface demands attention, turning the object into something to be looked at, desired and questioned.

Rooted in queer visual culture, the works embrace the tension between masculinity and decoration, intimacy and spectacle, sincerity and irony. What might appear playful or absurd becomes a vehicle for examining how queer bodies, desires and identities are made visible.

MaxHammondStudio presents a contemporary crystal-encrusted sculpture – an original handcrafted work.

Created between 2024–2025, this piece was exhibited as part of “13 Beautiful Horses” in Leicester and featured in a review by Corridor8 Magazine (September/October 2025 issue).

This sculpture continues the artist’s exploration of masculinity, perception, and the visual language of the body through a refined and deliberate use of colour. Working within a compact, intimate scale, the piece focuses less on exaggeration of size and more on the symbolic weight carried through surface and tone.

Hand-formed in clay through an intuitive and instinctive process, the form remains direct and recognisable, allowing the material decisions to take precedence. The shaft is covered in deep blue rhinestone crystals—a colour traditionally associated with masculinity, stability, and cultural ideas of the “male.” This choice is intentional, referencing ingrained gender coding and the ways in which colour itself can reinforce stereotypes and expectations.

In contrast, the tip shifts abruptly into a neon, almost artificial pink. This area becomes immediately eye-catching—visually seductive and difficult to ignore. The transition between blue and pink creates a tension between what is culturally assigned as masculine and what is perceived as attractive or desirable. It raises questions around how these visual cues influence perception, particularly in relation to the body and intimacy.

Running through the surface, clear rhinestones are used to suggest veins and internal structure. These lines introduce a sense of anatomy, grounding the piece in something bodily and real while simultaneously abstracting it through material. The use of crystals to represent these organic elements creates a contrast between the natural and the artificial, reinforcing the idea that even the most “natural” forms are subject to interpretation and construction.

The sculpture exists within contradiction. It is visually vibrant and almost playful in its colour, yet conceptually it addresses deeper issues surrounding gender, expectation, and the coded language of appearance. By combining bold colour blocking with detailed surface work, the piece invites the viewer to reconsider how masculinity is both presented and perceived.

As with all works from MaxHammondStudio, rhinestones are used deliberately. Materials often associated with decoration or superficiality are elevated, challenging traditional hierarchies of taste and reinforcing the relationship between surface, identity, and value.

Each sculpture takes approximately 25–50 hours to complete. Every crystal is individually selected and applied by hand, creating a tactile, light-reactive surface that shifts depending on its environment.

These works are not mass-produced—they are physical extensions of personal narrative and lived experience.

The artist has been working within fine art for over eight years, holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art. Influences include Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, John Giorno, and Andy Warhol.
